Why My IT Background Makes Me a Better AV Technician

When people think about audiovisual production, they usually picture speakers, microphones, and lighting. What they don’t always see is the complex web of technology working behind the scenes—and what it takes to keep everything running smoothly.
Before founding Heron Events, I built my career in IT. Today, that background plays a huge role in how I approach every event we produce.
AV Is More Than Equipment—It’s Technology Integration
At its core, AV is about connecting systems: laptops, projectors, soundboards, wireless microphones, livestream platforms, and more. Every piece needs to communicate flawlessly.
My IT experience means I don’t just “set things up”—I understand how and why systems work together. That allows me to:
Quickly diagnose signal flow issues
Prevent compatibility problems before they happen
Optimize setups for reliability and performance
In other words, fewer surprises—and smoother events.
Real-Time Troubleshooting (Without the Panic)
Live events don’t pause for technical issues.
Whether it’s a presenter’s laptop not connecting, a resolution mismatch, or a last-minute software hiccup, these problems need immediate solutions.
This is where my IT background really shines:
I’m comfortable troubleshooting under pressure
I can quickly isolate the root cause (not just guess)
I know how to adapt when something unexpected happens
That means when issues arise, they get handled quietly and efficiently—often before anyone in the audience notices.
Supporting Client Technology with Confidence
One of the most overlooked parts of AV is working with client-provided technology.
Every event is different:
Different laptops
Different adapters
Different presentation software
Different levels of tech comfort
Because of my IT experience, I can:
Help presenters connect quickly and confidently
Troubleshoot unfamiliar devices on the spot
Provide guidance in a calm, professional way
For clients, this translates to less stress and more confidence walking on stage.
Project Management That Keeps Everything on Track
In addition to my IT background, I’m a PMI-certified Project Management Professional (PMP).
That certification isn’t just a title—it shapes how I plan and execute events:
Clear timelines and communication
Thorough pre-event planning
Contingency plans for critical systems
Efficient coordination with venues and vendors
The result? Events that feel seamless, because they’ve been carefully thought through from the start.
Proactive Problem Prevention
One of the biggest differences IT experience brings is a proactive mindset.
Instead of reacting to problems, I focus on preventing them:
Testing systems before showtime
Building redundancy into critical components
Preparing backup solutions for high-risk elements
Because the best technical issue… is the one that never happens.
The Bottom Line
Anyone can rent equipment.
What truly makes an event successful is the expertise behind it—the ability to anticipate challenges, solve problems quickly, and keep everything running without disruption.
My IT background, combined with professional AV experience and project management training, allows me to deliver exactly that.
And for our clients, that means one simple thing: peace of mind.
